Probe call over deals

Anti-coup activists released an open letter yesterday demanding probes into "suspicious" deals by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont and Council for National Security chairman General Sonthi Boonyaratglin.
The letter, co-signed by Weng Tojirakarn and Prateep Ungsongtham, urged the Assets Examination Committee and the National Counter Corruption Commission to take prompt action. The allegations include Surayud's ownership of a Khao Yai Thieng plot in Nakhon Ratchasima and whether it encroaches on a forest reserve. Other allegations relate to Sonthi allegedly having signed certificates to marry two wives (the Army chief is a Muslim); his "suspicious" disbursement of Bt1.2 billion in state funds in relation to the September coup; and his "suspicious" earmarking of Bt550 million to set up a special centre for peace-keeping after the coup.
