Boonyu outshines favourites

[ADVENTURE RACE] Boonyu Kawiratanakhajorn upstaged national stars to win the men's overall title at the Adventure Race Thailand Championships in Phuket yesterday.

More than 900 participants raced off from the Patong Beach after the opening ceremony, at which Tourism and Sports Minister Suwit Yodmani was the guest of honour.

The one-day meet was split into four categories - the 24-km adventure race, the 4-km fun run, the 24-km mountain bike and 24 kms of kayaking.

The first three events were run on the same route, with all competitors beginning the race at Patong Beach. They then climbed up and descended Khao Trai Trang followed by racing past the elephant camp.

After encountering the tough, hilly route for some distance, they found the first checkpoint at Karon Beach before heading to Kata Beach.

The second checkpoint was at Nai Harn Beach. After that, the contestants had to overcome the most dangerous and difficult part of the race - the rock climbing.

The contenders climbed from Ya Nui Beach to finish at Phrom Thep cave. Boonyu got through the stage with ease, leaving veteran runners Boonchu Chandecha and Boonthung Srisang behind.

The 24-year-old Boonyu crossed the line in two hours, 1 minute and 17 seconds with a broad smile on his face. Boonchu was second while Amnuay Tongmit finished third. National team runner Boonthung fainted during rock climbing and did not finish the race. Saiphon Pia-wong won the women's open category in two hours and 30 minutes. Briton Bella Comerford, the world triathlon champion, took second place, while third place was won by local teenager Mattika Rakhapan.
