Insight Info to offer a wider variety of TV programmes

Chulayuth, speaking yesterday about the government’s plans if iTV misses the March 6 payment deadline.
Insight Info, a local provider of television content through National Broadcast Television's satellite and cable-TV channels, yesterday announced a reshuffle of its programming to promote a mix of news and documentaries, sports and variety entertainment.

National Broadcast Television (NBT) has been awarded a concession from the Public Relations Department to produce quality programmes for more than 400 cable-TV operators throughout the Kingdom. The move is the department's solution to avoid any violation of TV licences by local cable-TV operators in showing international programmes.

Supavit Supaporn-o-pas, assistant to the CEO, said Insight Info was formed almost a year ago to produce TV programmes through the NBT network as well as satellite television in the Ku-band system. The company operates two major channels in the NBT network: News Line on NBT 8 and Sports Line on NBT 17.

"With the programme reshuffle, we have merged both News Line and Sports Line channels together into a single channel, NBT 17 News Variety and Sports, which will start on March 1," said Supavit, adding that the new channel would offer a good mix of content.

He said sports and documentaries would account for 51 per cent of content, followed by variety entertainment with 28 per cent, and news with 21 per cent.

Food connoisseur Santi Svetvimala, who writes a regular column under the name "Mae Choice Nang Rum", has joined the channel with his edutainment variety programme "Bangkok Leela" to be broadcast live between 11.30am and 12.30pm from Monday to Friday.

Well-known host Vachara Kannikar will also participate with his "Vachara Show", a variety talk-show programme broadcast weekdays between 8.05pm and 8.30pm.

Paisan Mangkornchaiya, Insight Info's station manager, said the company would focus on differentiating itself from the free-TV channels in offering news content to viewers.

"Without any limitation in time slots usually faced by other free-TV stations, we will give a full report of any hot issues and interesting incidents occurring every day. We will have also 11 breaking-news sessions a day or at every hour," said Paisan.

Supavit said that the station's revenues would come only by selling time slots for commercials.

"There are currently about 85,000 households who watch our programmes through the installation of a set-top box for the Samart DTH satellite dish. Another 2.5 million households watch our NBT 17 channel through 400 local cable-TV operators throughout the country," said Supavit.

He said the company had already invested more than Bt80 million in producing quality programmes and for the broadcasting licences for international soccer leagues such as the Calcio of Italy and the Championship in England.

He added that the company also expected to reach break even in four to five years.
