Compensation pay-outs to rise

A wide variety of social-welfare benefits will soon increase after an ongoing legal amendment is approved, Social Security Office (SSO) secretary-general Surin Jirawisit said yesterday.

The maximum treatment bills for work-related injuries suffered by employees will increase to Bt300,000, from the current rate of Bt200,000, while initial medical costs will rise from Bt35,000 to Bt40,000 and the cost for funeral services from Bt19,000 to Bt30,000.

Kin of employees killed at work will receive monthly compensation for 12 years, extended from the current eight years. Those suffering permanent disabilities sustained during work will receive lifetime compensation - up from the current half of their salaries for 15 years, while those who sustain injuries at work will receive compensation from the first day they stop working rather than after three days as at present, and at the rate of 70 per cent of their salaries instead of the current 60 per cent. This changes is now being vetted by the Council of State.
