Zidane set to show his magic in Chiang Mai

'Zizou fever' hit Chiang Mai city yesterday as enthusiastic local fans eagerly wait to watch French maestro midfielder Zinedine Zidane put on a show in the Adidas Impossible Match today.
The whole world could be forgiven for feeling jealous at the northerners who will have the unique opportunity of witnessing the three-time Fifa World Player of the Year return to the field for the first time since he hung up his boots after the 2006 World Cup. Zidane mania has gripped the northern province since the former Real Madrid star arrived on Wednesday. Upon landing in Chiang Mai, Zidane caused mini chaos, with large groups of fans, both Thai and foreigners, scrambling to get closer to the star to take a picture and collect an autograph from their favourite player. Zidane, who inspired France to victory in World Cup 1998, will lead the Predator team - which includes several star Thai players such as veteran striker Kiartisak Senamuang - against the F-50 side consisting of well-known players from Malaysia, Singapore and Thai legend Piyapong Piewon. The former French international midfielder will reportedly play for 75 minutes in the match, which will take place at Chiang Mai Municipal Stadium. Super Sport Action will televise the match live from 4pm. Chiang Mai Municipality Mayor Boonlerd Bhuranupakorn said the pitch, which was planted with a new layer of grass, was in excellent condition.
