Legal advice sought on Chaturon's 'visits'

The Council for National Security (CNS) is consulting with its legal advisers about whether Thai Rak Thai Party acting leader Chaturon Chaisang violated its ban on political activities after meeting voters in the Northeast, CNS chairman General Sonthi Boonyaratglin said yesterday.
Sonthi did not believe Chaturon had a hidden agenda to ruin national stability or to cause trouble by the tour. However, he was required to inform the CNS and Chaturon had failed to do so, he said. Sonthi said he had ordered the CNS secretariat to check if Chaturon's tour violated the ban. Chaturon went to the provinces of Khon Kaen and Kalasin on Sunday and Monday and spoke with groups as large as 300. He said the CNS did not scare him and it had no right to impose the ban, but Sonthi ruled out speculation that Chaturon had challenged the CNS by the action. He said the TRT leader knew what he should do these days. Meanwhile, deputy TRT leader Pongthep Thepkanchana said the ban on political activities had a "broad meaning" as it did not specify which actions fell into the category. The party only intended to meet local people, some of whom had not received aid from the government after suffering from the floods, he said.
