IT'S ALL IN THE GAME!
Angkhan slips at final hurdle

Angkhan Chomphuphuang is unlucky both in and out of the ring. After he went down to Kazakhstan's Bakhyt Sarsekbayev in the Asian Games boxing final, which ruined his chance of winning Bt1 million from the government, millions of TV viewers on the "One Night Genius" on Monday saw the wushu fighter-cum-boxer let a Bt1-million KTC credit card slip through his fingers.

Angkhan was among the eight contestants taking part in Channel 3's game show and one of the two finalists to give the right answer. The eventual winner would take home a Bt1-million credit card, using it either for shopping or to withdraw cash.

Angkhan was asked about a war in Thai history, but to the surprise of viewers the boxer didn't know the answer. His rival gleefully answered it correctly and claimed the prize.

"It was a difficult question. I really didn't know the answer. It's a pity. I went all the way to the final and let the golden chance fritter away. The thought makes me sad," he said. - The Nation.

Going great guns

No one thought Noppawan Lertcheewakarn would last the weekend and qualify for the Pattaya Women's Open. Neither she nor her family, for that matter.

No one from her family appeared in the players' box during the qualifying competition, as the teenage rising star advised her dad not to waste money on air tickets and to stay put in Chiang Mai.

Three days went by and the youngster was not ready for the homecoming. She scalped three higher-ranked players and booked a berth in the main draw of a WTA event, prompting her father to catch a plane from the northern town to the beach city on Monday night.

"I told him to stay at home because I never thought I would have come this far. He had to fly here, as he didn't want to miss my first-round match," she said. - The Nation.

Monk's word matters

Haste makes waste. So feels Udomporn 'Nong Orn' Polsak, who has decided to postpone her wedding following the advice of a famous monk in Nakhon Ratchasima.

The former weightlifter had planned to marry her boyfriend Chairat Lorprakarnsit at the beginning of the year. However, the Athens Olympic heroine had a change of mind when she went to ask for an auspicious time from the monk at Wat Sung Jor Hor.

"The monk said although my boyfriend's fate is good, it wouldn't help me in any way. If we still wanted to go ahead with the marriage, the monk said we would not be happy with our lives," said Nong Orn.

Her faith in the monk's predictions is quite strong. She also wants her parents to be happy.

After thinking it over, Nong Orn consulted her boyfriend and put off her wedding plans for two years.

The weightlifter doesn't want her children to follow in her footsteps. "If I have children, I want them to be tennis players or golfers and play for the national team. But then I shouldn't think about that for the next two years," she said. - The Nation.
