Fourteen injured in southern bombings

Eleven soldiers and three civilians were injured in several bombings in the deep South yesterday. Seven members of an army patrol sustained minor injuries when a roadside bomb exploded in the Bacho district of Narathiwat at 7am.

Seven district officials travelling to the scene in a personnel carrier escaped injury when a second roadside bomb exploded.

In Sungai Padi district, three soldiers sustained minor injuries when a bomb exploded during a routine patrol.

In the afternoon, a roadside bomb was detonated in Rangae district and injured Private Leab Wewichaigo, 22, a teachers' guard.

Police said the soldier was with 15 squad members escorting Ban Kathong School teachers to their homes. Soldiers opened fire on suspected militants, who fled.

In Pattani, a roadside bomb exploded in Khok Pho district, injuring well-known village headman Kuheng Sa-I.

In December, Kuheng was ambushed by suspected insurgents. He killed two in a gun battle. He was decorated for bravery by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont.

More than 1,900 people have died in violence in the Muslim-majority region in the past three years in spite of government promises to restore peace.
