IN BRIEF
SOUTHERN INSURGENCY

Security barrier along Malaysian border to be extended: Surayud The government will extend the security barrier along the Thailand-Malaysia border in an effort to curtail the insurgency in the South, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said yesterday.

Extending the barrier will prevent illegal workers from Malaysia entering the country, too.

The three-kilometre divide currently separates Sadao district in Songkhla from Malaysia's Padang Besar.

"The partition will make it easier for authorities to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in and out of Thailand," Surayud told reporters on the final day of a four-day visit to the region.

Surayud said the government would extend the fence 27 kilometres into Yala. - The Nation.
