Political activists led by former senator Jon Ungphakorn yesterday launched a new group to campaign for public participation in the drafting of a new constitution.
The People's Democratic Forum (PDF) introduced its website www.thaipood.com for receiving opinions and suggestions about the charter. "The drafting of a new constitution involves all Thai people. So everybody has to take part in the people's draft constitution, which the Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA) has to pay attention to," said Jon, who is the group's coordinator. Jon was speaking at a press conference yesterday at Victory Monument. The PDF was established to encourage people to take part in the drafting of the new constitution based on the 1997 People's Constitution. It is campaigning for an early election to restore the country to democracy. People can also put forward their opinions and suggestions at meetings debating such issues as the welfare state, administration system and political freedom. They will be held by the PDF on Sundays and Wednesdays from February 4 to 28 at the Student Christian Centre. Jon said the PDF would invite CDA members to study the people's draft constitution. "Please do not let only the minority draft the new constitution. We all have to do it together because it directly affects us," Jon added. Wannapa Phetdee The Nation
