School fires warning

Second Army Area commander Lt-General Sujate Watthanasuk yesterday warned of an increase in schools being burnt at the start of the drafting of the new constitution. "The instigation of situations and disturbances to crash the charter drafting is possible," he said.
Residents in the Northeast, especially in Nakhon Ratchasima, were now mobilising lookouts to guard against schools being set alight, he said, after they "had more understanding about the whole situation".Sujate cited a military intelligence report, saying arson attacks were ordered - but not carried out - by people from areas where the schools were located. Northeast police commander Lt-General Sathaphorn Laothong earlier threatened to punish officers at stations in six provinces for slow progress in probing the 20 school fires in their jurisdiction, including seven cases in which the causes of fires had not yet been identified. He said officers still found "inactive in their duties" would be transferred. The Nation
