Juice warning

A Public Health Ministry advisory yesterday cautioned consumers of the popular sterculiaceae juice not to drink too much of it.
The advisory said the juice might not possess advertised weight-loss properties.Ministry spokesman Sa-nga Damapong said the juice was made of a plant known commonly as samrong (Scaphium scaphigerum) and may even make drinkers gain weight if too much sugar was added. "Don't drink more than two glasses a day," he said. There is no proof the juice helps weight loss or possesses any other properties, he added. Drinkers might feel full consuming the jelly-like fibre extracted from sterculiaceae fruit and mixed in the juice. Citing a recent ministry test, he said sterculiaceae did have nutritional value and could be made in to various food products or desserts. He said Japan and China were importing sterculiaceae fruit from Thailand. He also called on manufacturers not to fell the trees for their fruit.
