Court rejects 'The Beach' order

The Civil Court yesterday accepted a petition against a final court order ruling out another 17 co-plaintiffs as eligible parties to demand costs for restoration of a Krabi beach by Hollywood studio Twentieth Century Fox following the shooting of "The Beach" movie seven years ago.
In their petition, Somsak Kitithornkul, mayor of Krabi Provincial Authority Organisation, and Phankham Kitithornkul, mayor of Ao Nang [Nang Bay] Provincial Authority Organisation, said the Supreme Court order on September 21 was invalid as it was issued two days after the previous charter was nullified by the coup makers. The Civil Court said both Somsak and Phankham's contentions "bore legitimate legal assertion" and ordered that the September 21 ruling on the other plaintiffs - Krabi residents living near Nang and Maya Bay and local environmental activists - be reconsidered. All the plaintiffs filed a civil lawsuit demanding both the Hollywood companies that produced and distributed the movie should pay interest plus Bt100 million to restore both bays. The September 21 court order also dismissed the then agriculture minister, the then Forestry Department and its former director-general as the first three defendants. Twentieth Century Fox and Santa International Film Production are the remaining fourth and fifth defendants in the trial. The Nation
