PM should add more ministers and deputy PM : Banharn

Chat Thai Party leader Banharn Silapaarcha suggested Thursday that Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont reshuffle the Cabinet by bringing in more active ministers and two more deputy prime ministers.

Banharn voiced concern over the sharp drop in approval for the government from 80-90 per cent down to only 50 per cent.

"If the PM does not do anything, the popularity may drop from 50 to 30,'' he said.

"Although the PM is diligent and honest, he needs competent ministers to efficiently administrate the country. I understand him because many ministers are civil servants. Their working style is like permanent officials - not fast and decisive.''

He complimented General Saprang Kallayanamitr, assistant secretarygeneral of the Council for National Security, for negotiating with farmers in Sara Buri over their grievances and persuading them to call off their planned protest in Bangkok on Friday.

"Concerned ministers have done nothing to negotiate with the farmers. The Cabinet needs people like Saprang. Even though he is straightforward, he is decisive,'' Banharn said.

He suggested that Surayud recruit deputy prime ministers on security and the social sector.
