Military 'is our anchor'

The military must act as an anchor for public morale and safeguard the country in light of the unstable situation triggered by political turbulence, Prem Tinsulanonda, the chief royal adviser to His Majesty the King, said yesterday.
"Soldiers must win the people's trust that they are capable of ensuring safety and normalcy," General Prem said.Prem, who is president of the Privy Council, said the country was facing troubled times, hence soldiers have a duty to maintain peace and stability so as to safeguard national development. "As servants of the monarchy and the nation, soldiers should remain united and focused on their mission to protect and steer the country forward," he said. He urged the military to take a lead role in restoring normalcy and quelling the separatist movement and political instability. Prem was speaking to New Year well-wishers led by Joint Chief of Staff General Songkitti Chakabatr. Also there were 84 senior officers, including Cavalry Centre commander Maj-General Suebpong Paowarat and key Cavalry Corps commanders.
