Power devolution plan to go to Cabinet next month

Decentralisation will see the capital's traffic police come under the authority of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, according to an official.

Wuthisarn Tanchai, director of the College of Local Government Development under the King Prajadhipok's Institute, said the decentralisation plan would be finalised next month before being presented to the Cabinet and the National Legislative Assembly.

He said the plan would transfer Bangkok's traffic police from the police force to the BMA. The city administration will also take over responsibility for the registration of hotels, night venues and marine transport from the Interior Ministry.

Provincial administrative organisations will receive more responsibility by taking over provincial zoning, information, education, libraries and sports stadiums.

Apart from structural changes, the plan aims to strengthen local government by improving efficiency, establishing good governance and increasing public participation.
