Prime minister to host labour talks

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont will today meet with about 800 employees and employers who have been invited to discuss matters concerning blue-collar workers and their employment conditions.
The key points to be discussed with the PM include revising the minimum wage in accordance with the real cost of living, and the establishment of a new organisation to directly oversee matters regarding safety at the workplace The meeting was scheduled to take place at Government House and the prime minister promised to listen carefully to what his guests had to say. Wilaiwan Saetia, the president of the Thai Labour Reconciliation Committee, said she had received an invitation to join the meeting but already had a prior appointment. However, she called on the government to speed up its investigation into Social Security Fund spending, which she said was not transparent. She referred specifically to the fund's latest project to provide a Bt2.8-billion information technology system. Meanwhile, Sangsit Piriyarangsan, a member of the National Legislative Assembly, said the most important labour issue for the government was to make an amendment to the Labour Relations Act in order to promote the peaceful assembly of labourers during disputes. Labourers' gatherings were still viewed by employers in a negative way, said Sangsit. He agreed with Wilaiwan that priority should also be given to the investigation into the Social Security Fund's spending.
