Vaccine smugglers nabbed

A shipment of smuggled bird-flu vaccine worth Bt20.7 million was intercepted recently on Koh Samui, officials said yesterday.

Three men from Bangkok were arrested on charges of smuggling 30 boxes of the H5N1 vaccine, with each carton containing 60 bottles, said Decha Kangsanan, chief of Koh Samui district in Surat Thani.

He was holding a press conference with Dr Wuttikrai Saksurakan, a provincial medical official, in Surat Thani's Muang district.

The three suspects - Wichian Sirimaneetham, Chula Vidhayasinthana and Noppadol Wonglert - confessed that they were illegally importing the vaccine from Hong Kong and preparing to transport the contraband to the capital.

The officials said all three suspects would be prosecuted.
