Focus on Bhanapot case

A working group attached to the Assets Examination Committee (AEC) will investigate high-ranking officials connected to allegations of tax evasion Bhanapot Damapong, brother-in-law of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

A source said an AEC sub-committee had asked the working group to track down Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Bank of Thailand and Revenue Department documents related to the share transactions at the centre of the allegations.

Last month the civil-service committee of the Finance Ministry fired Revenue director-general Sirote Swasdipanich and four others for failing to collect taxes from the sale of Shin Corp shares by Thaksin's family.

Meanwhile SEC secretary-general Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala yesterday testified before the AEC about the Shin Corp sale.

Two of Thaksin's children are under AEC investigation for alleged tax evasion too. They are expected to appear next Wednesday. The AEC said it might conclude the probe this month.
