Fifth school fire in Korat

A school building was partially damaged by fire yesterday morning, the fifth school in this Northeast province burnt since the September 19 coup.

Sikhiu district police inspector Lt-Colonel Somchai Jaisungnone said fire broke out at the kindergarten building of the Prasarn Witthaya School in Tambon Sikhiu at 10.25am.

The fire damaged four classrooms and is estimated to have cost Bt200,000.

Fire-fighters in five vehicles took about 20 minutes to put out the fire. The school is 700 metres from a police station.

Somchai suspected workers may have accidentally started the fire when welding but they have denied this.

Nearly 20 schools in the North, Northeast and Central regions have been damaged by fire since the coup.
