Thailand set to unleash Kiartisak

Evergreen striker Kiartisak "Zico" Senamueng is set to mark his emotional return to the national team in more than two years when Thailand attempt to stamp their authority over arch-rivals Vietnam in the opening match of the 37th quadrangular King's Cup tournament today.

Following a string of lacklustre performances in both the Asian Cup 2004 and World Cup 2006 qualifying rounds, the old guards - including Kiartisak, who is widely regarded as the country's most prolific striker - were discarded to make way for younger players.

After almost two years in which fans witnessed both ups and downs in Thailand's performance on international stages, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) stirred up the public by recalling the services of senior players for big tournaments next year, including the Asian Cup 2007, which will be co-hosted by Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Chanwit Pholchivin, the national team's head coach, said he would use the King's Cup tournament as the first test for his revamped side, made up of a blend between experienced and young players eager to show their potential.

"In the opener [against Vietnam], I need to put on our best players as we had only 10 days for preparations. I will try to select a good mixture of senior lads, who have much experience, and youngsters from our Asian Games squad in the starting line-up," Chanwit said. "Apart from focusing on the results, I will look at the performance of each player in this event for long-term purposes.

"The striking partners will be Kiartisak and Sarayud Chaikumdee because both did well during training and seem to have a better understanding among the strikers. Regarding the left back, I would like to use Natthaporn Panlit rather than Natthapong Samana whom I think is still too young.

"For the goalkeeper, Kittisak Rawangpa will come in in place of Kosin Hathairattanakul, as I opt to see his form after a long absence. " added Chanwit.

The short-time preparation, however, doesn't deter Chanwit, who is confident that Thailand will get off to a winning start against old foes Vietnam.

The match between Thailand and Vietnam will take place at Suphachalasai Stadium. Channel 7 will televise live from 6.30pm.
