Asian, European teams set for battle royale to win Royal Trophy

Continental pride and honour will be at stake when the colossal Continents of Asia and Europe collide in what promises to be a battle for the ages for the Royal Trophy, held at the exclusive Amata Spring Country Club from January 12-14.

Players will be battling to gain stewardship over the Perpetual Trophy, graciously donated by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In the exciting build up to the second edition of the Royal Trophy, captains and players from both the European and Asian Teams have expressed their opinions about their participation in the event.

Seve, What are your thoughts on the Royal Trophy as an international Event?

Seve Ballesteros: We made history with the inaugural Royal Trophy and I am confident that it will grow into one of the world's great sporting competitions. There was an electrifying atmosphere and I'm certain we'll see even greater enthusiasm in 2007. I would like to use this opportunity to invite the people of Asia and Europe to come together and witness first hand, team golf at its finest.

Joe, how do you rate the prospects of the Asian Team?

Joe Ozaki: All of our players are all capable of playing outstanding golf. I am looking forward to confronting the challenge of playing against Europe and I am also determined to deliver the Royal Trophy to our Asian people, on home soil.

Team events and stroke play are two distinct modes of golf in their own right. Tell us about team events?

Paul McGinley: The players love playing in team events. They are tremendous fun, but are obviously competitive in their own right.

Thaworn, you were one of the stars for the Asian team in the first edition of the Royal Trophy. Give us your take on what we can expect this year?

Thaworn Wiratchant: I am going into the Royal Trophy with plenty of confidence. I was fortunate to win two out of my three matches the last time around. Playing with Thongchai against Faldo and Woosnam right here in Thailand with the amazing support from the fans was an experience of a life time.

Henrik, from making the winning putt at the first ever Royal Trophy to clinching victory for the European Team at the Ryder Cup this year. What a year you've had. Your thoughts?

Henrik Stenson: I seem to have developed an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time to play an important role in these team events - and long may it continue.

European golf is obviously on a high and the Asian Team will be desperate to knock us off our pedestal. That is a recipe for some fascinating golf, with no quarter given.

Paul McGinley had plenty to do with you making your Royal Trophy debut. Would you like to elaborate?

Darren Clarke: Paul is one of my best friends in golf, and he was full of praise for the Royal Trophy after he played in the first one.

Thongchai, much has been made of the wealth of talent that captain Ozaki has at his disposal. Of the intangibles that may come into play, which do you think will probably play the biggest part?

Thongchai Jaidee: The crowd and atmosphere at the event, definitely. When you are out on the course wearing the Asian uniform and there are huge galleries like at the Royal Trophy, the feeling is amazing. It gives you an incredible level of determination to win. I will work very hard to make Thailand, our Asian people and our beloved King proud.

You have not lost in your last 10 matches at the Ryder Cup, which is an amazing record. Will nerves be a factor at all?

Lee Westwood: I think having team-mates who are also friends goes a long way in keeping you focused. Paul is paying a return visit, and my old pal Darren Clarke is also in the team.

Darren and I managed to win both of our matches at the K Club and it will be great to have familiar faces out there.
