University staff now 'official', PM says

The government has changed the official designation of staff at autonomous universities from "university employee" to "university official", Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said yesterday during an academic conference at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology, Lad Krabang.

He also promised that university officials would have the right to receive salary increases and royal decorations like government officials.

The status of university officials won't be inferior to that of government officials. On the contrary, flexibility in administration will aid them in developing the universities," he said.

Surayud said the country's university administration needed to be decentralised but he would not ask universities to go autonomous unless they were willing and ready.
