Slum dwellers storm BMA

More than 100 slum dwellers yesterday stormed the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) compound after being told the city governor had refused to meet them.
The group, which sought to remind Governor Apirak Kosayodhin about his "promise" to help solve their problems, confronted BMA guards and managed to force their way into the compound after a brief scuffle. This resulted in damaged to a sliding door.Deputy Bangkok Governor Buddhipongse Punakanta, who represents Governor Apirak, said the slum dwellers' problems were being dealt with by BMA managers. He arranged for Apirak to meet the group next Wednesday. The slum dwellers met Apirak on October 30 with five requests, including quick implementation of three model housing projects and granting those allowed to reside in the three projects the right to full and permanent house registration. Buddhipongse said little progress had been made because a working committee that had been given the task had been disbanded. The group agreed to appoint a small number of representatives to coordinate with the BMA in future meetings.
