Health projects scrapped

The Public Health Ministry yesterday scrapped its Bt96-billion mega-projects initiated by the previous government.

Public Health Minister Mongkol Na Songkhla said the projects would need a lot of money when there were still old debts for the interim government to sort out.

The projects had three aims. One was to produce more doctors, the other to build centres of excellence, and to promote healthcare and disease prevention. All were intended to develop and elevate the country's basic infrastructure regarding public health.

Referring to centres of excellence that would focus on specific medical expertise, Mongkol said medical science did not need big buildings but for doctors to care about treating people. Only normal-sized projects, including the one to produce more doctors, would remain, he said.

The ministry was also working on public healthcare, including a project to create community nurses who could reach patients at home and give people better access to healthcare, Mongkol added.
