Nine-year-old Thai girl critically wounded in LA gang crossfire

Los Angeles - A 9-year-old girl Thai standing in her kitchen was shot in the head by a stray bullet as two gangs exchanged gunfire across the street, according to Associated Press Friday.
Charupa Wongwistiri was hospitalized in critical condition following the Wednesday night shooting in the Angelino Heights neighborhood west of downtown, Officer Jason Lee said. Wongwistiri was standing next to her mother in the family's kitchen when outside, someone in a car pulled up to a group of men on the street and opened fire. The men then returned gunfire, and one of the bullets struck Wongwistiri. AP reported that Wongwistiri and her family came to the United States from Thailand about a year ago seeking a better life, her mother told reporters in Thai. "She now feels this was a mistake," said Officer Pete Phermsangngan, who translated for the mother. "She said in two days Christmas is coming, New Year's is coming and she doesn't have any future." No other injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made. Police were searching for Cesar Zamora, 24, who was named a person of interest in the investigation.
