Bird-flu study wins award

A medical study into bird-flu by a group of Chulalongkorn University doctors has won a top award from the National Research Council of Thailand.
Prof Dr Yong Phooworrawan and his medical research team had studied a mutation of the H5N1 virus and decoded its DNA, while looking into the genetic pattern of avian influenza in epidemiological terms. The award's citation said the study had resulted in effective diagnosis of the viral disease and preventive measures against human-to-human contraction. Yong and his 41 associate researchers represent the Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine and relevant faculties from other universities. Their study was the best from 14 nominations in nine fields. The 13 other nominations received complementary awards. Dr Yong dedicated the award to the teamwork and contribution of each team member. The study has already been published in 20 medical journals. Yong and his team will receive Bt200,000 in prize money at the an awards ceremony being held at Bitec in Bangkok on February 2. Recipients of complementary awards will each be given Bt50,000.
