Hearing on FTA talks

The Cabinet yesterday acknowledged a report on the recent progress in Thai-Japanese free-trade talks
before a public hearing on Friday, according to Pisan Manapawat, deputy permanent secretary at the Foreign Ministry.
The Cabinet was informed of the recommendation made by the Thailand Development Research Institute which suggested that the free-trade agreement (FTA) with Japan should benefit Thai industries. Pisan said the next step was to consult with the National Legislative Assembly. He said the government wanted representatives from various sectors to participate in the debate on the agreement. Pisan said he welcomed criticism of the planned FTA. "I am glad the government will host a public hearing. The government has placed a high priority on the results of the hearing," he said.
