Banpu inks study deal with Laos

Banpu yesterday signed an agreement with the Lao government to conduct a feasibility study for the development of coalmining and a coal-fired power plant.
The plant would have a gross capacity of 1,800 megawatts. The projects would be undertaken in Hongsa district of Xayabury province. Banpu called the agreement's signing only a primary stage. Prior to the execution of any agreement related to investment, the company must negotiate the terms and conditions. The project requires a long lead time and contains several risk factors. Banpu shares rose 1.66 per cent yesterday, closing at Bt184. Meanwhile, Thailand's PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) yesterday said its Vietnam 16-1 project indicated a potential for a crude-oil discovery. Following drill-stem tests, preliminary results showed the field had a flow rate of about 7,000-7,300 barrels a day, PTTEP said in a statement. PTTEP Hoang Loan holds a 28.5-per-cent stake in the project, while Soco Vietnam, Opeco Vietnam and Petrovietnam Exploration and Production hold 28.5 per cent, 2 per cent and 41 per cent, respectively. The Vietnam 16-1 project, located offshore southeast of Vung Tau City, covers a total area of 3,350 square kilometres.PTTEP shares fell 1.92 per cent yesterday to close at Bt102.
