Municipal governor shot dead

A former mayor of Lao Khwan Municipality in Kanchanaburi, Manit Permpoon, was shot dead yesterday morning while inspecting ballot boxes at the municipal office.

Manit was shot four times at close range by at least two of four gunmen. Twenty-nine cartridges and seven bullets were recovered at the scene.

Manit was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Witnesses told police a driver had collected the escaping gunmen in a green Isuzu pickup that sped away along the Sagrajohm-Lao Khwan Road.

Police suspect Manit knew he was in danger because he wore a bullet-proof vest and carried a pistol. Manit fired two shots at his killers.

Today there is a by-election to replace Lao Khwan mayor Supichaya Leearreekul, who was shot dead in her home along with her husband. Manit was waiting to be confirmed as a municipality member.
