Old wiriing blamed in rash of school fires

The Basic Education Commission may take disciplinary action against directors who allow their schools to be damaged.
A Nan school caught fire on Friday night after an electrical short circuit. And fire broke out at a Tak school yesterday afternoon, destroying four classrooms and a house. In Nan, a neighbour spotted the fire that burned a building of the Ban Nammong Pangsa School in Tha Wang Pha district on Friday night. It took fire-fighters two hours to put it out. Nan police forensics inspector Lt-Colonel Kriengkrai Chaemchum said there were no suspicious circumstances. He said the wiring was old. School director Athuek Pongkhamrod said the building had been rebuilt in 2002 as a cafeteria and activities hall using old wood. Damage was estimated at Bt260,000. Basic Education Commission secretary-general Khunying Kasama Varavarn said there had been many school fires and directors had been warned. Kasama ordered directors to implement prevention measures. If they fail they and education-zone directors will face disciplinary action. The cause of the Tak fire is not known. The Tak governor and senior Army officers inspected the scene yesterday. Yasothon Governor Weerawit Wiwattanapanit dispatched health officials to check on students upset by the fire at a Sai Mun district school on Wednesday. Officials were checking 404 schools for deteriorating electrical wiring.
