AEC no 'kangaroo court', says assets investigator

Assets Examination Committee (AEC) member Amnuay Thantara yesterday hit back at a legal representative of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Lawyer Noppadon Pattama accused the AEC of being a "kangaroo court" and demanded "justice" for his client. Amnuay said Noppadon feared the committee's "straightforward style". He asserted Noppadon had rushed to judgement of the AEC, which has yet to deliver any ruling on any person, and added its members were not biased against Thaksin. "If this was a kangaroo court, we would have reached a decision a long time ago. Does he make these noises because he fears our straightforward style with no lobbying and no connections?'' Committee member Khunying Jaruvan Maintaka yesterday downplayed allegations of bias from Noppadon. She said the AEC worked as a team and decisions were not based on the opinions of any one person. "We cannot stop how he feels. I myself believe justice is most important. We do not just depend on documentary evidence but witnesses and circumstantial evidence, too, including that from the former prime minister, cashiers and account officers,'' she said. Noppadon yesterday called on the AEC not to be used by the junta and warned that society would judge its actions.
