New music downloads from RS

RS is offering downloads of MP3 digital formats for music videos and music-video karaoke at Bt30 per digital music licence, while GMM Digital Domain provides a similar service via its iKeyclub project.

New-media director Vorapoj Nimvijit said yesterday the company had compiled a library of more than 20,000 MP3 songs that could be downloaded via the Internet at speeds ranging from 512kbps to 21mbps from www.mixiclub.com.

The new service does not limit the time for listening to the music, burning it on a CD or transferring it. It gives customers a one-time licence to download and back up the selection. Customers can pay for the service online with an RTD card or credit card via the website.

After registering their user name and password on the homepage, customers can buy songs or albums of Thai music for listening on desktop computers, pocket PCs, Windows media players or MP3 players.

Vorapoj said about 5 million digital players had been sold in the Kingdom, but only 5 per cent of MP3 content for them was legal.

"We eyed the MP3 digital music-download market as open for opportunity. The firm expects it will be popular among people who have entered the new era, and the music is very easy to download, especially for users who want to catch up with new technology," he said.

The firm targets customers who want to buy their favourite songs and download them into their MP3 player or iPod for playback wherever they go.

The firm also has plans to cooperate with partners to offer customers special offers and campaigns and to set up kiosks in superstores or shopping centres where customers can download music.

"I believe digital music files will prevail over existing music albums in the next five years, given the trend of the market and customer demand. The firm is a content provider that provides various content and digital formats to customers," Vorapoj said.

Meanwhile, GMM Digital Domain provides songs over the Internet with its iKey service. The service allows customers to download their favourite song or music video to their PC, mobile phone or MP3 player. The firm also provides the iKey service via kiosks and distributes free CDs to invite customers to try the new service. It expects to provide iKey via 2,000 kiosks nationwide by the end of this year.

The iKey service has two payment methods. Customers can subscribe at Bt119 per month for unlimited downloads or pay Bt35 per song.
