Danai is Thailand's best hope

[TENNIS] Danai Udomchoke emerged as the new hope of the Thai tennis team following the withdrawal of Paradorn Srichaphan from the men's singles competition.
Danai is seeded third in the draw, which does not include defending champion Paradorn, who pulled out of the Games due to a nagging injury to his right wrist. Danai, who won a team bronze medal for Thailand after the team lost to Japan on Wednesday, has a first round bye. He should sail through to the semi-finals where he is likely to meet either second-seeded Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan or fifth-seeded Go Soeda of Japan, the conqueror of Paradorn in the semi-finals of the team competition. Top seed and last Games silver medallist Lee Hyung-taik and second-seeded Wang Yeu-tzuoo of Taiwan are the other strong contenders for the singles championship. In the doubles, Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana are seeded second and should have a walk in the park in round one against a pair from Bhutan. Their real test will come when they face Japan's Takao Suzuki and Satoshi Iwabuchi, who defeated them in the team's competition two days ago. On the women's side, two-time silver medallist Tamarine Tanasugarn, the fifth seed, will open her campaign against Uzbekistan's Agul Amanmuradova while compatriot Suchanan Viratprasert will play seventh-seeded Akiko Morigami of Japan. The top four seeds, Li Na and Zheng Jie of China, Akiko Nakamura of Japan and Sania Mirza of India all have first round byes. In the mixed doubles, Sonchat teams up with Suchanan Viratprasert, and Sanchai with Montinee Tangphong, seeded sixth. They all enjoy first-round byes.
