Shooting squad have a mixed day

Thai pistol ace Jakkrit Panichpatikum had mixed fortunes in the men's 25m standard pistol competition, playing a stellar role in the team taking the bronze medal, but falling by the wayside in the individual event.
Jakkrit, 33, who claimed the silver at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, and two gold medals in the SEA Games in Manila last year, finished a disappointing fifth in the individual competition. He shot an aggregate of 569 points, five points behind eventual winner Jaspal Rana from India. Title-holder Opas Ruengpanyawut scored 563 points to come a distant 12th position, while team-mate Pongpol Kulchairattana shot 554 points to finish in 23rd place. Thailand fared better in the team category when the trio collected a total of 1,686 points to pick up a bronze medal. South Korea with 1,696 points and India with 1,690 points claimed the gold and silver medals, respectively. Jakkrit had finished fourth in the 25m centre-fire pistol individual event and a disappointing seventh in the 10m air pistol team and 25m centre-fire pistol team in Busan, South Korea four years ago. The bronze was his first medal in the Doha Games. He still has a chance of redeeming himself with a gold in today's 25m centre-fire pistol event. "My performance has been below par so far. HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana wished me best of luck and I think it helped us win the bronze in the team event," said Jakkrit, who won a bronze in the 50m pistol in the World Cup in Milan, Italy, this year. "The 25m centre-fire pistol team event is not my favourite event but I will try my best," he said Meanwhile, world 10m air rifle record-holder Tavarit Majchacheep failed to find his form. In the men's 50m rifle 3-position, he aggregated 1,154 points to finish 10th. His elder brother Varawut was also off-form, shooting 1,136 points for 26th position. Komkrit Kongnamchok came a distant 38th with 1,117 points. In the team event, Thailand came eighth with a combined score of 3,407 points, while China clinched the gold medal with an Asian record of 3,494 points. Kazakhstan and India finished second and third with total scores of 3,457 and 3,456 points, respectively. Preechachan Wiriyanupappong The Nation Doha
