HM congratulates new WHO chief

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has sent a message of congratulations to Dr Margaret Chan on her appointment as the new director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Chan was a recipient of the Prince Mahidol Award, instituted in honour of His Majesty's father, in 1998. She was cited for her role in efficiently controlling the bird-flu outbreak in Hong Kong.

She held many important posts at WHO prior to her appointment to the top post.

Chaiyong Satjipanond, ambassador and permanent representative of Thailand in Geneva, said Chan was overwhelmed by the message of congratulations from His Majesty. "She said this is the greatest honour for her and her family," Chaiyong said. - The Nation.

AEC boss praises Banharn

The Assets Examination Committee's (AEC) panel chief, Udom Fuangfung, yesterday praised Chat Thai Party chief Banharn Silapa-archa after he answered the panel's queries about the controversial land sale of Khunying Pojaman Shinawatra.

Udom said Banharn had given more clear-cut answers in regard to the land sale on Ratchadapisek Road by Pojaman than Democrat Party chief adviser Chuan Leekpai. He said Banharn, who was a former finance minister, had overseen more ministries than Chuan, and had answered questions about the land sale, but not many on the two-and three-digit lottery. - The Nation

Govt's honesty applauded

People have applauded the interim government's honesty and transparency while they disliked its slowness and indecisiveness, according to the Suan Dusit poll yesterday.

The people also believed in the potential of the Council for National Security (CNS) but disapproved of its slowness, the poll by the Suan Dusit Rajabhat University revealed

The poll was the result of its survey of 7,586 respondents, conducted from November 20 to Wednesday.

The government's strengths most cited by respondents also included their reconciliation approach, sufficiency economy, and the determination to suppress corruption.

However, the government should do more to stem the violence in the three southernmost provinces and solve the economic problems, the poll said. People also wanted the government to be more strict and decisive so they could achieve their goals quickly.
