Coma girl's father holds no grudges

The father of Juling Pongkunmul, the schoolteacher in Narathiwat who was beaten into a coma in May, said yesterday on being selected as a "Good Model Father" that he wished His Majesty the King's merit can help her to regain consciousness.

Soon Pongkunmul, a Chiang Rai native, said he was holding on to the hope his daughter would recover and that he held no grudges against anybody for what happened to her

Juling, he said, was an obedient and healthy child. "I always taught her to think of others before herself as merit would befall her. I have taken good care of her and given enough warmth since she was very young," he said.

Soon was among 351 men to receive Good Model Father certificates from Privy Councillor Kamthon Sinthawanon in an afternoon ceremony at Suan Amporn to mark His Majesty's 79th birthday, also National Father's Day.

Other recipients included Sumet Tantivejkul, secretary-general of the Chaipattana Foundation under His Majesty's patronage; Taveesak Senanarong, former director-general of the Fine Arts Department; Admiral Prasert Boonsong, former Navy commander-in-chief; and Jongchai Thiangtham, a senior Chat Thai Party member.

Since the inception of the award 27 years ago, over 10,000 fathers have been recognised.

Lek Manee-ngern, 82, a father of seven daughters from Phichit, said he was very happy to get the award.
