GETTING PERSONAL WITH TEERAPOL CHOTITANAPIBAL
Tips from a professional traveller

This top THAI executive tells us how to pack toileteries and warns against forgetting clothes
With his jet-setting job, Teerapol Chotitanapibal, vice president of Thai International Airways (THAI) sales and distribution, has a career that many would envy. Yet, he says, he doesn't enjoy flying that much, especially when it's on business. Like other frequent flyers, Teerapol has encountered problems like delays and unavailability of seats, but still, he prefers to be philosophical about those bad experiences, explaining that it's pointless to get annoyed. The THAI executive studied in Britain, so travelling overseas is nothing new for him. He's travelled so frequently that he's even lost count of the number of countries he has visited. The Nation recently talked to the globetrotter about his journeys and his life.
What is your favourite destination? I love going to the beach, but my favourite country is New Zealand. I spent three years there as THAI's general manger.
Where would you love to go? I want to see Alaska and want to know how people live there.
What kind of suitcase do you use and who packs it? Samsonite. I do it myself. I've never had someone else pack for me because I've been travelling and living abroad since I was young.
What kind of carry-on bag do you use? A leather bag with wheels by Condotti. I've used it for around 10 years. It's very durable. What do you carry on? A shirt, a T-shirt, a pair of trousers, underwear and a pair of socks. A toiletries bag so I can prepare myself before landing, and a travel-style power socket.
What are your favourite clothes? I am not a brand-name person. If it fits and the colour and fabric are to my liking, it is okay.
How do you pack clothes and shoes, say for a five-day trip? I normally pack simply and take just enough for the trip. When I have a chance, I'll send soiled clothes to the laundry. For a short trip, I take two pairs of shoes - one for formal wear and a pair of sneakers. What's your favourite travel outfit? Most of my trips are for business so I wear a suit, preferably in a dark colour.
Any tips on packing toiletries? I put shaving cream and toothpaste in a sanitary napkin disposal bag - that way, if it leaks, it won't make too much of a mess.
Do you read on the plane? Sometimes. But most THAI business trips are long-haul, so I usually sleep. I may pick up a newspaper or magazine. I also watch films, but only on the return trip.
You don't leave home without…? Clothes. I've forgotten all sorts of things but I always remember clothes!
