The Improbable but True Story of a Cat Nap

An elderly woman complained to police on Tuesday that one of her neighbours had kidnapped her favourite cat and asked for a ransom of Bt50.

Ampawan Chimcharoen, 65, told police that a man known only as Ad kidnapped her cat, Nam Tan, from her home.

"He demanded that I give him a ransom of Bt50," she said. "When I told him that I don't even have one baht, he walked away. I have to wait for my husband who is not in town."

She decided to alert police because she was worried that Ad would kill her cat. Ampawan has about 50 cats and Nam Tan is her favourite.

"This is the fifth time that he kidnapped my pets. Every time he got the money he wanted. But this time, he stole my favourite cat and I'm worried that he'll kill her."

Police then visited Ad at his house. Ad told police that he was only joking.

The grandma decided not to pursue the case after Ad returned Nam Tan to her.

Local police chief Pol Col Tawatchai Yingcharoensuk said that this was the first time that he has  investigated a case of cat napping.
