Flap over Meechai fading fast, says deputy

The bickering over the leadership of National Legislative Assembly (NLA) Speaker Meechai Ruchup-han has ended without affecting the body's legislative performance, deputy speaker Charan Kullava-nijaya said yesterday.
"The threat to impeach Meechai has not materialised and NLA members, including those opposing Meechai, are ready to move on to devote their attention to legislation," Charan said. The bickering broke out last week after NLA member Admiral Bannawit Kengrien attacked Meechai for exerting undue influence over the appointment of a panel in charge of allocating seats for 20 NLA committees. The panel convened its first meeting yesterday without any protests. It elected NLA member Prasong Soonsiri as chairman and set a November 30 deadline to complete its mission. It also scheduled for NLA members to notify their preferences on committee seats next week. The allocation process will commence on November 27. The Council for National Security will not get involved in NLA affairs, its secretary-general Winai Phattiyakul said yesterday, adding that the council was not behind the attack on Meechai's leadership. Bannawit said he had turned his attention from Meechai to focus on his legislative agenda, such as the re-establishment of a national maritime transport line. "I hope to make constructive contributions if I can secure a seat on the NLA committee on transportation," he said, vowing to push for the revival of the state-run maritime service - Thai Maritime Navigation - which was dismantled by the deposed government.
