More health funding

The Cabinet agreed yesterday to boost funding for the universal healthcare scheme, raising the per-capita subsidy from Bt1,659 to Bt1,899.69 a year.

The scheme covers more than 48 million people, which includes many children, elderly, unemployed and self-employed people.

The request for more funding follows a decision by the government recently to stop charging Bt30 per visit when people seek treatment under the scheme.

"The government has limited funds," Public Health Minister Mongkol na Songkhla said yesterday. The decision to raise the subsidy to Bt1,899.69 a year is likely to cost Bt91.41 million more.

Mongkol called on hospitals and medics to treat stateless people. He believed there were more than two million seeking Thai citizenship in the North.
