Syndicate member gets 3 years for scam

The Criminal Court yesterday sentenced a man to three years' jail for his involvement in a lottery-gang scam.
Thongsuk Chanakaree had pleaded guilty to being a member of an illegal organisation and embezzlement. The court reduced Thongsuk's sentence from six years because of his guilty plea. In addition to prison, he was also ordered to make restitution of Bt900 to the Government Lottery Office, which gave him souvenirs in the belief he was someone else. The court said that Thongsuk impersonated a man in a bid to be allowed to select a numbered ball during the June 1, 2001 lottery draw. Lawyer Apisak Silprasit said Thongsuk would appeal the sentence, which he felt was too harsh. Earlier, the court sentenced four others to six-year terms for their roles in fixing the lottery. A fifth man was convicted of embezzlement and jailed for two years.
