Checks on new ambulances

The Auditor General called on the Public Health Ministry yesterday to keep all 232 high-performance ambulances in their original condition, pending further checks into their alleged sub-standard quality.
In a letter to Public Health Minister Mongkol na Songkhla, the OAG also asked the ministry to submit two of the ambulances for further checks. The letter, signed by Auditor General Khunying Jaruvan Maintaka, said abnormal assembling had compromised the vehicles' quality and many items of equipment did not have certificates of quality assurance. "For 230 other ambulances, please ask relevant hospitals to keep them in their original condition and to not allow any modifications or changes," it said. But hospitals could use the ambulances pending further examination. The letter also asked the ministry to establish a fact-finding committee to look into the quality of the ambulances within one month. It said the panel should be independent from the ministry's permanent secretary.
