Students invited to contest for Dublin Awards

3rd Annual Junior IMPAC Dublin Literary Awards commences; prices worth up to Bt10,000

The 3rd Annual Junior IMPAC Dublin Literary Awards for Thailand, designed to promote creative English-language essay-writing among high-school Thai students, commences Tuesday in all four regions of the country.

Entries for essays with the theme ""A Tale of Thai Grace and Compassion" will be accepted from now until December 15 from 14-18-year-old Thai students.

Regional winners in the contest will receive cash prizes and the national winner will receive a free trip to Ireland to attend the Senior Dublin Literary Awards ceremony in Ireland, which is the world's richest literary prizes.

3rd Annual Junior IMPAC Dublin Literary Awards for Thailand is a national contest organised by The Nation, Nation Junior, Phuket Gazette, and CityLife.

The event is sponsored by international productivity consultant IMPAC, Embassy of Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and Property Care Services Co (PCS).

This year's judges for Bangkok and the national awards are Dr Charuaypon Toranin, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education; Sirikorn Maneerin, Director, TK Park, and former Deputy Education Ministe; H.E. Eugene Hutchinson, the Irish Ambassador to Thailand; Assoc Prof Suchada Nimmannit, former President of Thailand Tesol, the association of teachers of English; Assoc Prof Prathoomporn Vajrasthira, a SeaWrite Judge and lecturer in International Relations, Chulalongkorn University; Ajarn Atchara Pradit, Head of Children's Literature Programme, Faculty of Humanities, Srinakharinwirot University; Salisa Pinkayan, author of English-language novel Chalida; and Pana Janviroj, President, The Nation.

The students who ages are between 14 to 18 up to December 15, 2006 are eligible to enter the contest. The length of the essay should be between 800 to 1,200 words. Regional winners will be announced in January 200and the national winner will be recognised at a gala dinner in February.

The winning essay in each region will earn Bt10,000 each and two merit awards of Bt5,000 each. The national winner will then chosen from the regional winners.
