Nesac calls for new Red Line

The National Economic and Social Advisory Council will propose to the government a new electric rail line linking Don Muang, Makkasan and Phaya Thai.

The design and planning will take place as the line is constructed.

Okas Taepalakul, chairman of Nesac's infrastructure, transportation and energy committee, said yesterday that the new Red Line would connect to the express line for Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Transport Minister Teera Haocharoen has instructed Nesac to prepare a comprehensive report to be presented to him within two weeks.

Okas believes that the 32-kilometre Red Line would strengthen the railway system, accommodating at least 700,000 passengers per day.

The government has to act quickly as the Red Line is capable of supporting the express link to the airport, which will be completed in two years, he said.

"I agree with all the directions taken to build the three train lines. But if you ask me which one is the most important, I would say the Red Line. But a station must be added at Yommarad, which will benefit those taking the normal train from Makkasan, linking to the North-South rail line," he said.

The project's plan and terms of reference had been proposed to the last government.

Nesac has also presented the overall picture and objectives of the public transport system to the Cabinet of Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont.

According to the terms of reference, the project will strictly adhere to international standards, as the Red Line is being simultaneously constructed and designed. The train line will be clearly separated from the road to minimise traffic congestion.

Accessibility for the disabled will be another priority.
