Acting Thai Rak Thai leader Chaturon Chaisang said the party was forming a working group to investigate the government, the Council of National Security (CNS) and the Constitution Drafting Council.
He said the party would not participate in any assembly or activity involving the current administration because "we can't accept the government's origins". Chaturon said yesterday in an interview on his first day as interim party leader that Thai Rak Thai had informed the Election Commission about the changes in the party's line-up and would comply with relevant provisions. He said he would discuss political party law with the EC. Under the law, a political party has to choose its new executive board within 45 days of its leader resigning, Chaturon said. "But we are still under the order banning political activities," he said. "So we want to know how long this period will last as we do not want to go against the law." Chaturon said the party is forming a group to monitor the work of the government and the CNS, including the Constitution Drafting Council. "We are doing it so we can make the party's opinions known to the public. Our criticisms will be creative," he said. Chaturon refused to talk about the lifting of martial law. "As long as I am acting leader of Thai Rak Thai the party won't hold any political activity that could involve an encounter. "Our standpoint is to restore democracy by peaceful means and to refrain from any political confrontations," he said.
