Flood victims call for suspension of tourist boats

Flood victims along the Bangkok Noi Canal Thursday called on authorities to stop tourist boats from sailing through their community.
"The boats send waves that are threatening to damage our house," Pracha Chatsuwan, 60, said. He also complained that some tourist guides and tourists apparently laughed when they saw some house floors shaking dangerously. "I am not complaining about the flood. I am complaining about the lack of empathy among some people," the elderly man said. Prawat Sudprasertsilp, another resident of the Santichon Songkroh community, said his anxiety increased whenever passing boats shook his flooded house with waves. "Sometimes the floor goes up," he said. Somchat Srithongon, 43, said his house had kneedeep floodwater causing damage to his wooden furniture and refrigerator. "But my concerns are about my elderly mother. She is too old to move around. Now we have to live with floods," he said. Relief items and medicines have reached the flood victims. On Wednesday night, a sevenyearold girl drowned in the Chao Phya River. Witnesses said the girl was strolling along the riverbank in Bangkok's Khlong San district when a passing cargo boat caused big waves and one swept her away. Police called on people to beware of the danger from waves. The Nation
