Wandee lifts a gold medal

[WEIGHTLIFTING] The powerful Wandee Kameaim was on top of the world yesterday after winning Thailand's first gold medal at the World Women's Weightlifting Championships in the Dominican Republic.
The event, which ends on Saturday, features 569 lifters from 79 nations, including a 15-member Thai squad. In the 58kg division Wandee was neck and neck with Qiu Hongmei of China. In their first attempt, the Thai jerked 125kg, while the Chinese failed at 130kg. Then both succeeded in their second attempt. The Thai lifter and Qiu also failed in their third attempt at 135kg and 136kg respectively. With the lighter body weight of 57.01kg, Wandee was awarded the gold medal in the clean and jerk, leaving the 57.62kg Qiu to take the silver medal, while the bronze medal went to Svetlana Tsarukaeva, with 125kg, of Russia. Wandee also won a bronze medal in the snatch with a lift of 100kg, with the Russian and Chinese winning the gold and silver medals respectively. Qiu won the total lift gold medal with 237kg, while the silver medal went to Tsarukaeva with 233kg and Wandee took her second bronze with 230kg. Wandee is Thailand's third world champion after Pawina Thongsuk and Junpim Kanthatian. After seven days of competition, Thai lifters have won eight medals, with 2005 world junior champion Suda Chaleephay winning one silver and two bronze in the 53kg class. Thailand won two more silver medals in the 48kg category through Aree Wiratthaworn, the Athens Olympic bronze medal winner.
