Apology to Rama V

Council for National Security leader General Sonthi Boonyarat-glin and other members yesterday conducted a ceremony at a statue of King Rama V to "apologise to him for staging the Sept 19 coup".

Reading out a statement during the ceremony, held inside the Army headquarters compound, Sonthi reiterated that he and other coup leaders had no intention to acquire power for themselves.

Sonthi offered an apology to the late monarch, who founded Chula-chomklao Royal Military Academy from which Sonthi graduated, if the coup had "irritated" him, and asked for his protection.
