Tsunami memorial

An underwater memorial to the victims of the 2004 tsunami has been set up off badly affected Phi Phi island in Krabi province.

The Tsunami Undersea Memorial has been installed off the shore of Ao Tonsai and is composed of three granite blocks arranged to form an equilateral triangle, with one smaller block in the centre.

The distance between two points of the triangle is 5,395 centimetres, corresponding to the number of victims whose names and nationalities were identified.

Each face of the blocks is engraved with memorial statements from the Thai embassies of 11 countries whose citizens lost their lives in the tsunami.

A Thai sala is located at a distance of 2,874 centimetres from the main memorial site, the number representing victims whose identity could not be determined.

The memorial is a project of the Transport Ministry, Thai Airways and the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
